Theme of the Year: “Newborn Safety – Every Touch, Every Time, Every Baby”
SUMMARY:
The Department of Pediatrics at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital, in association with the IAP Puducherry Chapter, observed National Newborn Week from 14th to 21st November 2025. The initiative aimed to strengthen awareness on essential newborn care and reinforce the need for safe, evidence‑based practices to ensure every newborn’s right to health and survival.
Across the week, a series of academic sessions, competitions, public awareness events, and hands‑on training programs were organized. These activities brought together students, faculty, parents, and community members, creating a collaborative platform to promote quality neonatal care.
Day 1: 14th November 2025 
Event: Children’s Day Celebration
The week began with vibrant Children’s Day activities in the Pediatric Ward. A cake‑cutting ceremony, engaging games, and fun interactions helped create a cheerful environment for the young inpatients. Faculty members actively participated, and prizes were distributed, making the children feel cherished.

Day 2: 15th November 2025 
Event 1: Mini Exhibition & Public Awareness Talk
A mini exhibition was inaugurated by Dr. Arulkumaran, featuring posters and models on breastfeeding, maternal health, infection prevention, and neonatal warning signs. An awareness talk followed, stressing key newborn care practices such as exclusive breastfeeding, hygiene, vaccination, and early danger‑sign recognition. Attendance included 78–80 mothers and caregivers. Pamphlets summarizing newborn care guidelines were also distributed.

Event 2: Poster Competition 
A poster competition for UGs, PGs, and staff nurses allowed participants to creatively present themes such as KMC, breastfeeding support, neonatal resuscitation, and infection control. Nearly 30 participants showcased impressive and informative entries.

A community outreach session focused on early illness recognition, maternal nutrition, and newborn care essentials. The event saw interactive participation from around 50–60 attendees.

Day 3: 17th November 2025 
Event 1: Quiz for AN & PN Mothers
An interactive quiz was organized to reinforce maternal understanding of breastfeeding, immunization, sleep safety, and hygiene. About 40 mothers participated enthusiastically, and winners received prizes.

Event 2: Well Baby Contest 
The contest emphasized good nutrition, growth monitoring, and immunization. Around 50 infants participated, and parents were acknowledged for maintaining optimal care.

Event: Postgraduate Quiz 
A neonatology quiz for PGs covered topics such as jaundice, nutrition, infections, and NRP. A total of 24 PGs participated, showcasing commendable academic skills.

Day 5: 19th November 2025 
Event: Undergraduate Newborn Quiz 
An engaging quiz for undergraduates was conducted by Dr. Jeevitha, with nearly 130 students participating. The competition encouraged clinical thinking and improved understanding of newborn care basics.

Day 6: 20th November 2025 
Event 1: NRP Simulation Workshop 
A practical Neonatal Resuscitation Program workshop was held under the guidance of Dr. John Emmanuel and Dr. Jeevitha, providing PGs with hands‑on experience in life‑saving resuscitation skills.

The outreach session highlighted maternal nutrition, ANC practices, and infection prevention. Around 30 women participated.

The concluding ceremony recognized winners of various competitions. Certificates and prizes were awarded by Dean Academic Dr. K. Karthikeyan and Medical Superintendent Dr. Pragash.

Event 2: Guest Lecture 
A guest lecture on “Perinatal Optimization” was delivered by Dr. Ramkumar, Consultant Neonatologist, Cloudnine Hospital, Chennai. The session provided valuable insights into improving neonatal outcomes. Around 100 UGs and PGs attended.
Conclusion:
National Newborn Week 2025 was successfully conducted with excellent participation and teamwork. The activities reinforced the message “Newborn Safety – Every Touch, Every Time, Every Baby,” promoting continued commitment toward better neonatal health.

Programme Overview:
The Department of Pediatrics conducted an offline interactive guest lecture on “Tests of Statistical Significance” on 08th November 2025 as part of the Research Week celebrations. The audience consisted of postgraduate students, faculty members, and interns from the department.
The session began with a formal introduction of the guest speaker, Dr. Viswanath Narendiran, Senior Resident from the Department of PSM, JIPMER, who holds expertise in epidemiology and biostatistics.
Dr. Viswanath delivered a comprehensive lecture covering the foundations of statistical significance, types of statistical tests, selection of appropriate tests based on study design, p-values, confidence intervals, and common errors in statistical interpretation.
The lecture was engaging and interactive throughout, with the speaker using relatable examples from clinical and public health research. After the theoretical component, a dedicated doubt-clearing session enabled postgraduates to seek clarification on statistical aspects of their thesis work and departmental research projects.

Outcomes:

  • Participants developed a clear understanding of statistical significance and its interpretation.
  • Postgraduates learned to select appropriate statistical tests for various research designs.
  • Improved competency in interpreting p-values and research data.

Way Forward/Conclusion:
The session was highly productive and informative, with active participation from trainees and faculty. The interactive nature of the session ensured that doubts were clarified effectively, fostering a supportive learning environment.
Going forward, the department aims to organise additional sessions focusing on advanced biostatistics, data analysis software, and research methodology workshops to further enhance research skills among postgraduate students.

Introduction
The Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Psychiatry, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College & Hospital (SMVMCH), in collaboration with the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) Puducherry Chapter, observed Child and Adolescent Health Care Week with a series of academic, awareness-oriented, and community-based events.
The objective of the week-long celebration was to:
Educate parents, students, and community members on physical, mental, emotional, and social aspects of adolescent health. Encourage participation from faculty, postgraduates, undergraduates, nursing students, and the community. Provide a platform for adolescents to express themselves and understand their responsibilities toward a healthy lifestyle. A total of 8 major events were conducted both within the institution and in outreach settings.

Day 1- Inauguration & Pamphlet Distribution (7th November) as part of Teenage day

Event Highlights
The Child & Adolescent Health Week was formally inaugurated on 7th November by Dr.Prakash (MS), Dr.Bharath Kumar (Prof & HOD), Dr.Arulkumaran (Prof) and senior faculty members from the Departments of Pediatrics and Psychiatry. A specially designed health awareness pamphlet was released and distributed to parents and caregivers. A comprehensive health talk was delivered to the assembled parents by Paediatric and Psychiatry faculties and postgraduates focusing on:
Principles of raising a healthy teen, importance of routine health check-ups, balanced diet and physical fitness, impact of excessive screen time, early identification of behavioral issues and importance of communication within families with the help of posters prepared by postgraduate students were exhibited. Topics discussed were on adolescent nutrition, mental well-being and substance abuse prevention. Parents showed high engagement, asked questions, and were given prizes for active participation.
Memes competition on adolescent challenges was conducted for UG students by Dr.Sawantharia (SR) and Dr.Rhiyaz(PG). Winners were chosen. Awareness Talk at Thiruvennainallur Health Camp:

Day-2: Seminar on Common Adolescent Problems for Nursing Students:

A seminar talk was given by Dr. Arulkumaran as part of healthy lifestyle day on 8/11/25. Nursing students gained confidence in identifying and handling adolescent issues with respect to healthy lifestyle during clinical postings.
Day-3 Daughters’ Day Celebration – Drawing Competition
Venue: Postnatal Ward, SMVMCH

Theme: “My Dream for My Daughter’s Future”
The competition aimed at empowering mothers and promoting positive aspirations for girl children on 10/11/25. Mothers expressed themes such as education and career ambitions.  Winners were chosen and prizes were distributed for winners. Postnatal mothers actively participated, and the event fostered a warm, hopeful environment within the ward.
Day 4- Pledge Ceremony for Adolescent Boys

The event was conducted by Dr.Arulkumaran(Prof), Dr.Anandhraj(PG) and Dr.Rhiyaz(PG) on 11/11/25. The boys recited the pledge with enthusiasm, reinforcing positive habits and social responsibility.
Day 5- Quiz Competition for Postgraduate Students:
Topic: Adolescent Health
Participants: MD Pediatrics and Psychiatry Postgraduates
The event was conducted by Dr. Velprashanth on 12/11/25 in Paediatric demo room. It encouraged academic competitiveness and strengthened clinical knowledge in adolescent medicine for post graduates. Winners were chosen.
School Health talk for Adolescent girls:

Health talk was given in Conifer school for adolescent girls on menstrual hygiene, healthy diet, stress management and HPV vaccination by Dr.Srinidhii(PG) and Dr.Monisha(PG) on 12/11/25.
Day -6: Speech Competition for Undergraduate Students
Event was conducted by Dr.Sawantharia (SR) over 2 days for UG students on Adolescent challenges. Students were appreciated for their confidence, articulation, and originality of thoughts.
Day 7- Valedictory function was held in Basement auditorium in SMVMCH on 13/11/25. Guest lecture was given by Dr. Kiruthika on adolescent problems. Prize distribution was done for winners for various competitions.
Conclusion
The week-long program successfully met its objectives and strengthened the institution’s role in adolescent health promotion, community engagement, and medical education. The involvement of faculty, students, parents, and community members made the initiative impactful and far-reaching. The organizers express gratitude to IAP Puducherry, the administration of SMVMCH and all departments and volunteers whose cooperation led to the success of the event.

Poster competition for UG’s:
Undergraduate students prepared creative posters on the theme of Antimicrobial resistance – Role of doctors. The posters highlighted the importance of avoiding misuse and ensuring safe practices. Students enthusiastically participated and presented their concepts effectively. Prizes and certificates were awarded to the best posters.
Public Awareness talk:
A health awareness talk on the Rational Use of Antibiotics was delivered by Dr. Arulkumaran, Professor of Paediatrics, along with postgraduate students. The session was conducted for parents and grandparents of children attending the OPD and admitted in the wards. Placards highlighting ideal usage and misuse of antibiotics were displayed to the audience. The session was highly interactive, with queries from the audience being addressed in detail.
Skit by Postgraduates
Postgraduate students performed an interactive and informative skit on the rational use of antibiotics. The skit was well received and made the concept easily understandable for the audience. Prizes were distributed to the best performers.
Various clinical conditions where Antibiotic stewardship has to be implemented was given in the form of Scenarios on spot to PGs   and discussed. The programme was prepared by Dr. Jai Kumar and Dr. Jeevitha, and the session was moderated by Dr.Nishanthi, Professor of pharmacology and Dr. Udhayashankar, Professor of Microbiology. Around 30 PGS are participated. The program was very useful with good inputs from the Professors.
Competition on Antibiotic stewardship – Case based Scenarios for postgraduates:
Quiz competition for UG students was held on 26.09.2025. Quiz competition was conducted in the form of written MCQ questions.  Scenarios on common clinical bacterial diseases like pneumonia UTI Otitis media etc were asked and what is the rationale antibiotic to be given were discussed. Around 35 Interns were participated. The prizes were distributed to the winners.

Summary:

The Department of Paediatrics SMVMCH and IAP Puducherry Chapter jointly organised 38th IAP Divisional Round for Undergraduates – 2025 for Undergraduates on 26th August 2025 at SMVMCH in the Hospital Basement Auditorium. Undergraduate students of 8 Medical Colleges participated in the quiz.

Dr.A.Arulkumaran, Professor of Paediatrics was the Divisional co-ordinator of the quiz. Dr.T.Ezhil Nilavan, Assistant Professor of Paediatrics was the quiz master and Dr.Jai Kumar was the additional quiz master.
A Preliminary round was conducted at 10.40 am in the form of a written test with 25 questions (Fill in the blanks) and 5 top scoring teams were selected. The 5 teams who are selected for the final quiz are students from JIPMER, SMVMCH, IGMCRI, AVMC and MGMC& RI.
After the preliminary quiz the final quiz started at 11.30 am. The rounds were conducted as per Central IAP Quiz guidelines for undergraduates. Final year Undergraduate students, Interns, paediatrics Postgraduates, Faculties of the Department were the audience for the quiz. An audience round was also kept at the end of each round
JIPMER students are the winners and the runners up are from MGMCRI.

The winners were awarded with trophies and Paediatrics books by the Dean Academic Dr.K.Karthikeyan and Medical Superintendent Dr.Pragash and HOD of Paediatrics Dr.T.Bharath Kumar.
The quiz master Dr.T.Ezhil Nilavan and Dr.Jai Kumar were also felicitated at the end of the quiz.
The winners and runners of the quiz will participate in the next State Level Quiz with Tamilnadu.

Event Summary

The Department of Pediatrics at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital (SMVMCH), Puducherry, celebrated World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) 2025 from 1st to 7th August with immense enthusiasm and dedication. In alignment with the global Theme: “Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems”, the week-long program was aimed at educating, empowering, and building sustainable support systems to promote optimal breastfeeding practices.

DAY 1: 01-08-2025
Event 1: Inauguration Exhibition

The week began with a formal inauguration led by Dr. Prakash, Medical Superintendent of SMVMCH, accompanied by faculty from multiple departments. In his keynote address, the chief guest highlighted that breastfeeding is a shared societal responsibility. He stressed the importance of creating supportive environments across healthcare, workplaces, and communities, where mothers can thrive and practice exclusive breastfeeding without fear, stigma, or isolation. An exhibition displaying informative posters and pictorial representations of breastfeeding techniques, health benefits, and responsive feeding was held. Pamphlets containing the benefits of breast milk were also distributed to the women folks.

Event 2: Poster Presentation

As part of the World Breastfeeding Week 2025 celebrations, a poster presentation competition was organized based on this year’s theme, “Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems.” The event was held under the guidance of Dr. Arun Kumaar and witnessed enthusiastic participation from both undergraduate and postgraduate students, with over 50 creative and informative entries. The posters effectively conveyed key messages on breastfeeding promotion, support mechanisms, and community empowerment. The competition was judged by Dr. Niveditha, Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The winners were felicitated, and all participants were commended for their originality, effort, and commitment to advocating breastfeeding awareness through art and education.

Event 3: Community Health Talk- Thiruvennainallur RH

As a part of the celebrations of WBW 2025, Community Health talk was conducted in Thiruvennainallur Centre headed by Dr. Ezhil Nilavan, Assistant Professor of Paediatrics with postgraduates and the medical officers of the local RHC. As the theme of the WBW 2025 is ‘Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems’ health talk was delivered to the working mothers, adolescent women and general community.

Health talk highlighting the hurdles faced by working mothers in establishing exclusive breast feeding, Methods of breast milk expression, storage and availing Paid Maternity Leave, was delivered to over 50 antenatal and postnatal mothers with active participation in the form of doubt solving. Following which, questionnaires were distributed, and a written quiz was conducted among the patients for which winners were allotted prizes.
DAY 2: 02-08-2025
Event 1: Postgraduate Competition- Postnatal Counselling
To promote effective communication, a counseling competition for postgraduates was organized in the postnatal ward under Dr. Ezhil Nilavan and Dr. Jai Kumar. Students were assessed for breastfeeding-focused communication.
This event emphasized that counseling is a critical tool in empowering mothers and dismantling harmful myths, ultimately fostering sustainable breastfeeding behavior.
Scores were given to the counselling based on the Kalamazoo Checklist for Communication, which was modified for breastfeeding and used for assessment.
DAY 3 : 03-08-2025 Health Talk – Antenatal Mothers (SMVMCH) Dr. Jeevitha, Senior Resident of Paediatrics and postgraduate, conducted a health talk for antenatal and postnatal mothers. The session covered:-
  • The importance of early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding
  • Identifying and responding to hunger cues
  • Common misconceptions and cultural myths
  • Strategies for working mothers to continue breastfeeding
  • Emotional and physical readiness to breastfeed
The talk reinforced that a well-informed mother is the foundation of a successful breastfeeding journey.
DAY 4 : 04-08-2025
Antenatal Mother Quiz

DAY 5 : 05-08-2025 Event 1 :Postgraduate Quiz Competition
Dr.Ezhil Nilavan, Assistant Professor of Paediatrics and Dr. Keerthana, Senior Resident of Paediatrics organized a digital quiz via the Quizziz app with 30 enthusiastic postgraduate participants. The questions centered around breastfeeding physiology, policy, and community-level interventions. The quiz encouraged collaborative learning and reinforced key messages from this year’s theme.

Event 2: Undergraduate Quiz Competition
Simultaneously, Dr.Jeevitha, Senior Resident of Paediatrics conducted a quiz for undergraduate students. From 150 participants, 10 finalists competed in teams. The interactive session prompted vibrant discussion about supportive strategies in clinical and community settings to sustain breastfeeding.

DAY 6: 06-08-2025 Event 1: Rangoli Competition for Nursing Students
A vibrant Rangoli competition was organized for nursing students as part of the World Breastfeeding Week 2025 celebrations, under the coordination of Dr. Keerthana, Senior Resident of Paediatrics. The students showcased their creativity through artistic depictions of colostrum, breastfeeding practices, and the importance of community support beautifully with around 50 enthusiastic participants, the event highlighted the power of visual communication in health education and awareness. The competition was graciously judged by Dr. Priyadarshini, Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. All participants were commended for their effort, innovation, and commitment to promoting maternal and child health through meaningful art.
Event 2: Quiz Competition for Nursing Staffs
A separate quiz was conducted for nursing staff to test and refresh their knowledge on breastfeeding best practices, hospital policies, and the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI). Nurses were applauded for their ongoing role in providing emotional and practical support to new mothers.
DAY 7: 07-08-2025
Event: Valedictory Event
The valedictory ceremony marking the conclusion of World Breastfeeding Week 2025 was held on 7th August at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital, Puducherry, with active participation from faculty, students, and healthcare workers across departments. The event was graced by esteemed dignitaries: Dr. Chitra Vasudevan and Dr. Hemarani, Professor, Rajiv Gandhi Government Women & Children Hospital, Puducherry.
After inauguration by the chief guest, felicitation of the chief guest was done by the Director of SMVMCH. Prize distribution was then held to honor the winners of various competitions conducted throughout the week, including poster presentations, quizzes, counseling sessions, and creative arts. All participants were acknowledged for their enthusiastic contributions.
Dr. Chitra Vasudevan emphasized the importance of coordinated and sustainable breastfeeding support systems – extending from healthcare settings to homes and workplaces. She highlighted the need for inclusive policies, community awareness, and male involvement to ensure every mother is empowered to breastfeed successfully.
Dr. Hemarani delivered a compelling guest lecture on closing the gaps in breastfeeding support at multiple levels – adolescent education, antenatal counseling, postnatal care, and community outreach. She stressed that sustainable breastfeeding is not possible without the collaborative efforts of families, frontline workers, and institutions.
The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Arulkumaran, Professor of Pediatrics, who extended his gratitude to faculty and administrative staff for their support. Students and postgraduates for their active engagement. Nursing staff and outreach workers for their dedication and guest speakers for their invaluable insights. He reaffirmed the department’s commitment to continuing efforts that prioritize breastfeeding through capacity building, mother-friendly care, and systemic support. The valedictory function marked a successful close to a week filled with learning, collaboration, and a shared vision for healthier mothers and children.

The Department of Paediatrics SMVMCH organized 38th College Round for Undergraduates-2025 on 30th July 2025 at SMVMCH in the Lecture Hall 3 of college final year of MBBS students participated in the quiz.

Dr. A. Arulkumaran, Professor of Paediatrics was the Divisional coordinator of the quiz. Dr.Ezhil Nilavan, Assistant Professor of Paediatrics was the quiz master and Dr.Jai Kumar was the additional quiz master
A Preliminary round was conducted at 2:00 pm on 15th July 2025 in the form of written test with 20 questions and 4 teams who scored top were selected for the final Prelims Quiz.
The Final College Round Quiz started at 2:00 pm on 30th July 2025. The rounds were conducted as per Central IAP Quiz guidelines for undergraduates. Final year Undergraduates students, Interns, Paediatrics Postgraduates, Faculties of the Department were the audience for the quiz. An audience round was also kept at the end of each round.
The winners are Ajaykrishna & Aakash.S and were awarded with trophies and the participants were given certificates by Director Dr.Kagne and HOD of Paediatrics Dr.T.Bharath Kumar.

Inauguration of exhibition on acute diarrhoeal disease and ORS:
A mini exhibition was inaugurated in the hospital podium of SMVMCH with posters in local languages (Tamil) on the symptoms of dehydration, ORS uses, role of Zinc in acute diarrhoea, diet to be given during diarrhoeal illness etc the exhibition was inaugurated by The Medical Superintendent Dr.M.Pragash and The Dean Academic Dr.Karthikeyan. Pamphlet printed in local language (Tamil) was released to the public. The programme was also attended by faculties and Postgraduates of Department of Paediatrics and other departments. Around 75 to 80 women folk, men grandmothers attended the event.

Health Awareness talk was organised in the Hospital Podium to the public on ORS:
A Health talk was given by Dr.A.Arulkumaran, Professor of Paediatrics along with Postgraduates of the department. A demo was given to public by the Nursing Staffs of the Department on the preparation of ORS and the about be given depending on the age group. This was followed by an MCQ competition on acute diarrhoea and ORS was conducted with Yes/No answers. Around 60 people participated in the event. The winners of the competition was awarded prizes.

Health Awareness talk on ORS at Thiruvennainallur PHC:
A health awareness talk was given at Thiruvennainallur PHC on 25.06.2025 by Dr.Sawantharia, Senior Resident of our department on ORS and its importance on the management of diarrhoeal illness. Around 50 women, children, men participated in the event.

Health Awareness talk on ORS at Panchamadevi anganwadi:
A health awareness talk was given at Panchamadevi anganwadi on 27.06.2025 by Dr.Leelavathy, post graduate of our department on ORS and its importance on the management of diarrhoeal illness. Around 50 women, children, men participated in the event.

The importance of exclusive breastfeeding, avoidance of formula feeds and junk foods, importance of starting home based complementary after 6 months, providing healthy snacks to school going children and avoidance of JUNCS, improving the physical activity and restriction of screen time were the points highlighted in the talk. This was followed by MCQ competition with Yes or No answer printed in the local language (Tamil) on obesity for the crowd and the winners were awarded prizes. Around 100 women/men along with children attended the event.

Event 3 : Poster competition for Undergraduates

Poster presentation competition was conducted for Undergraduates students. Around 50 students participated in the event, prizes and certificates were distributed for the top three posters.

Event 4 : Schoold health awareness talk on obesity

A Health awareness talk on obesity complications, preventive aspects and life style modifications including importance of physical exercise and decreasing the screen time were educated to school students of Poovarasakuppam. Around 100 students participated in the event. The talk was given by Paediatric Postgraduates. The session was made interactive with the use of placards. A display of unhealthy foods (JUNCS) causing obesity and healthy foods were kept as a small exhibition for educating the school children. Short physical activity session was conducted at the end of talk.

Event Summary
The Department of Paediatrics at SMVMCH organized World Anaemia Awareness Day 2025 on February 13–14, 2025, with a series of programs aimed at spreading awareness about anaemia, its causes, prevention, and treatment. The theme for this year was “Raise Your Hands for Blood Health.”
Several activities, including exhibitions, health talks, poster competition and community outreach programs, were conducted over two days to educate the public and students

Event 1: Inauguration of Anaemia Awareness Exhibition

Posters highlighting causes of anaemia, symptoms, dietary sources of iron, and treatment options were displayed. A special stall with iron-rich foods, including vegetables, fruits, and fortified cereals, was set up for public awareness.

Over 100 individuals, including women, children, and elderly citizens, attended the exhibition. The event aimed to educate people on improving blood health through nutrition and lifestyle changes.

Event 2: Health Awareness Talk for the Public

Judges selected the top three presentations, and prizes were awarded to the winners.
Event 4: Community Health Talk at Thiruvennainallur PHC

A special health talk was conducted by Dr.Preethi.S, Dr.Priyanka at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Thiruvennainallur, focusing on anaemia in women, particularly in lactating mothers and children

Event 5: Screening for Anaemia among School Students

  • Location: Annai Vidhya Mandir High school, Thirubhuvanai
  • Target Group: Students aged 10–16 years
A health screening program was conducted for school children, focusing on identifying anaemia cases early. Anaemia awareness talk was given by Dr.Srinidhii and sources of iron was explained by Dr.Sawantharia, Senior Resident. Students were distributed prizes for actively involving and identifying iron rich sources.
