Rally was conducted for World AIDS/HIV Day on 10/12/2024. The event was organized under the guidance of Dr. Pritish (UHTC In-Charge) and in consultation with Dr. Premanadh (HOD). The session began with felicitating the inspector of police by the PG for supporting the rally. Then, an oath was taken according to the theme by everyone who participated in rally along with 100 Annai Thersa para medical students and staffs. Then the rally was started from the Police Ground Villupuram to E.B.bus stop (2km) for 1hr. The program was concluded and the refreshments were provided to all the participants..

Report on Foundation course on Palliative Care for Interns

The Community Medicine Department, in collaboration with Sanjeevan Palliative Care, Puducherry organized a 16-hour Training Workshop on “Foundation Course in Palliative Care” for medical interns on 9th and 10th December 2024 from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm. The program was conducted by faculty members Dr. Arulmozhi, Dr. Aswathy, and the Sanjeevan Palliative Care team. About 30 interns participated and benefitted from the training. The sessions covered various aspects of comprehensive palliative care, pain and symptom management, case-based discussions, role-play in communication skills, and a demonstration by a physiotherapist. Certificates were distributed to the interns and the program concluded with innovative ideas from students, a post-test, and a doubt-clarifying session.

Participants were given a manual on foundation courses in palliative care, sponsored by Sanjeevan Palliative Care Society. The palliative care team, SMVMCH facilitated interns for home visits of palliative care patients during UHTC and RHTC postings. An MCQ-based assessment on palliative care was conducted on the last day of Community Medicine clinical posting on 8th January 2025. Students who score 50% and above are eligible for a completion certificate on the Foundation Course in Palliative Care

Programme Overview:
The orientation session on ICMR Short-Term Studentship (STS), conducted on December 4, 2024, introduced Phase II MBBS students to the research program offered by the Indian Council of Medical Research. The workshop aimed to familiarize students with the objectives, benefits, and application process of ICMR STS. Introduction to ICMR STS, the process of application to ICMR STS and who can be a guide, were explained by Dr.Arulmozhi.M, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine. The step by step procedure of selecting a research topic, writing a research proposal and registration for ICMR STS was explained by Dr.Aswathy Raveendran Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine. Additionally, the workshop included experience-sharing by III year student Mr.Sajeev who have been previously selected in ICMR STS, to inspire the students.

Outcomes:
By the end of the workshop, students understood the program’s purpose, eligibility criteria, and its significance in fostering research skills among medical students. They learned to identify relevant research topics, draft structured research proposals, and navigate the online portal for registration. They understood their responsibilities in conducting ethical research, working with mentors, and contributing meaningfully to medical knowledge. They also gained motivation from past ICMR STS participant who highlighted the program’s impact on their academic and professional journey.

Way Forward/Conclusion:
The workshop concluded with a strong emphasis on the importance of engaging in research to address real-world healthcare challenges. Students were encouraged to apply the knowledge and skills gained during the session to apply for upcoming ICMR STS research projects.

On behalf of the Department of Community Medicine, SMVMCH, an awareness program was organized at the NCD Clinic, Thiruvennainallure, in observance of World Diabetes Day – 2024. The event took place on 14-11-2024 at the RHTC under the guidance of RHTC in-charge Dr. Aswathy mam and in consultation with HOD Dr. Premanandh sir .A total of 50 NCD patients participated in the session.

Key topics such as the introduction & theme of World Diabetes Day, risk factors, signs & symptoms, complications, diabetic diet, prevention, and management of diabetes were presented using Tamil PowerPoint slides.

Interns conducted a foot care demonstration and performed a role play emphasizing the importance of follow-up care. A quiz was organized for the patients on the topic of diabetes and Tiffin boxes was awarded to the 1st and 2nd prize winners. Finally a video showcasing the experiences of 6 diabetes NCD patients was displayed. Participants were served samba rava kichadi as refreshments, and queries were addressed at the end of the session.

Summary:
The Department of Community Medicine, in collaboration with the Global Journal of Health and Scientific Research of SMVMCH, organized a four-day workshop on Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (SRMA). The workshop featured Dr. Jennifer Florence Mary, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, MGMC&RI; Dr. Reenaa Mohan, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, SMVMCH; Dr. Preethi T, Associate Professor, Department of Paediatrics; and Dr. Suja Xaviour, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology, SMVMCH, as resource persons.

Faculty members from various disciplines, including Physiology, Biochemistry, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pharmacology, Community Medicine, Psychiatry, and Orthopedics, actively participated. The workshop covered critical topics such as title selection, formulating a search strategy using PICOT, screening articles with Rayyan software, data extraction, data analysis using RevMan software, and drafting SRMA articles.

Hands-on training was provided for searching articles on PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane databases, screening articles via Rayyan, performing data analysis using RevMan and Jamovi. Assessing risk of bias with various checklists. Participants were divided into pairs and encouraged to draft SRMA articles by the end of the session. Open feedback were obtained.

The workshop was designed as an intensive, practical program aimed at enabling participants to prepare and submit SRMA manuscripts to indexed journals.

The Department of Community Medicine at SMVMCH organized an interactive session in observance of World Mental Health Day on 23/10/2024 for the RHTC staff and workers in Thiruvennainallur. Guided by RHTC in-charge, Dr. Aswathy, and with insights from HOD Dr. Premanandh, the event opened with Dr. Nudhan Sabarish (PG) introducing and explaining the theme for the day. Participants were engaged through an interactive group activity, with members divided randomly by lot, conducted by CRMIs. Following which CRMIs led a health education session using a PowerPoint presentation and distributed pamphlets that underscored the importance of mental health. All attendees received gifts, and the session concluded with remarks from Mrs. Jeyanthi (MSW), followed by refreshments for everyone.

On behalf of department of community medicine, SMVMCH, World Rabies Day-Poster competition was conducted based on rabies awareness at barathi institute of catering and paramedical college on 24.09.2024 under the guidance of UHTC incharge, in consultation with Dr.Premanandh (HOD, Department of Community Medicine) . Around forty students attended the program in which 7 students presented their poster. They were given awareness on the topics rabies disease, symptoms, wound classification and their management. Topics were clearly explained by Dr.Selvamonika (PG) and medical interns along with social worker Mrs. Devasundari (MSW).

The program concluded with prize distribution to the 2 best poster of the participant and consolation prizes were given to the other participants.

Health Talk on Blood Donation:
On behalf of Department of Community Medicine (DCM), Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital, Under guidance of UHTC supervisor Dr. Arulmozhi mam and UHTC incharge Dr. Subalakshmi mam in consultation with Dr. Premanandh HOD sir, a Health Awareness programme about “WORLD BLOOD DONAR DAY” was conducted at Bhatathi Para Medical College under topics Introduction and Theme was explained by Dr. Nudhan Sabarish(PG), Criteria, Importance, Contraindications, Need for blood donation, The methods of blood donation and types of blood was explained by using charts and PPT presentation in tablet by CRMIs. On behalf of the Department of Community Medicine, SMVMCH, we conducted a Foundation Course in Palliative Medicine for the 2019 batch of medical interns on July 12, 2024. The session began with a pre-test containing 25 questions, followed by an introduction to palliative care by Dr. Aswathy Raveedran, covering its principles and scope. Participants were given a manual on foundation course in palliative care, sponsored by Sanjeevan Palliative Care Society. Dr. Arulmozhi discussed psychosocial care, emphasizing the emotional and social needs of patients. Dr. Jaya and Mrs. Sathya staff nurse addressed the nursing issues in palliative care, followed by Dr. Rema Devi’s session on managing respiratory and terminal symptoms. In the afternoon session, Mr. Saif conducted two sessions on communication skills, highlighting techniques for effective interactions with patients and their families.

On Day 2, a session on grief and bereavement was conducted by Dr.Aswathy. It was followed by an interesting session on building community-based palliative care by Dr. Arulmozhi. The journey of palliative care in SMVMCH and Sanjeevan Palliative Care Society was described and shown with photos by Dr. Arulmozhi and Dr. Mohan respectively. The session on ethics in palliative care was taken by Dr. Mohan, followed by emergencies in palliative care by Dr. Ramadevi. The concept of pain management was dealt with in detail by Dr. Prakash in the afternoon sessions, followed by exercises on pain management and discussion. The concept of neuropathic pain was covered by Dr. Ramadevi. The questions were asked and doubts were clarified. Post-test was conducted at the end and participant feedback was collected. The session was concluded by felicitating the speakers with mementos.

On behalf of Department of community medicine, SMVMCH, Workshop on Mastering Anthropometry Data Analysis was conducted on 5.7.2024 and 6.7.2024. 17 members were participated in the session. On the first day, participants were introduced, and the fundamentals of anthropometry, including Z scores, under nutrition indicators, and growth charts, were covered. This was followed by group activities on growth chart calculations, software installation for WHO Anthro Survey Analyzer, and data preparation techniques. The afternoon sessions focused on interpreting results, group presentations, and generating quality reports. The second day began with a recap and installation of WHO Anthro Plus software, emphasizing adolescent growth indicators. Participants engaged in further data preparation, interpretation, and public health applications of anthropometry, including literature review and discussion of research articles. The workshop concluded with sessions on integrating anthropometric data with other software tools like SPSS, Jamovi and R and manuscript writing, followed by post-test, feedback, and certificate distribution.

On behalf of department of community medicine SMVMCH.In RHTC World food safety day -2024 awareness programme was conducted in Government High School Sirumadurai on 24-6-2024.under the guidance of RHTC incharge Dr.Aswathy mam in consultation with HOD Dr .Premanandh sir.From 5 th std to 9 th std 174 students were participated in the session . By using charts Introduction&theme, Food poisons risk factors,signs and symptoms, prevention strategies,hand hygiene &hand washing steps and techniques were explained.Food additives which is used most commonly in eatable foods ,were displayed in chart.And asked the students to pick the safe food and unsafe additives added foods. On behalf of department of communtiy medicine smvmch, in rthc on representing world hand hygiene day 2024 for quiz competition preliminary was conducted to interns on 15.05.24 with the topic on world hand hygiene day aim, objectives, theme, who guidelines of hand hygiene, hand washing and infection control. 20 interns were participated in the preliminary session. based on the their marks 8 inters were selected in the final round quiz competition.

A health awareness program &competition was performed on “World Population Day” at Saradha Vidhyalaya Higher Secondary school in which Dr. Subalakshmi (SR) gave introduction about population day. A Quiz competition with 3 rounds containing 5 group of students then questions were also passed to students who were observing as audience followed by which an Elocution competition was conducted to teachers at on spot by picking a placard regarding global population issues. Trophy were given for 1st and 2nd prize along with certificate while 3rd prize was awarded with certificate. Around 50-60 students participated in the program. Pamphlet was distributed to everyone present there regarding the theme of World Population Day and charts were also prepared to give awareness about global population issues. Around 180 students participated in the program. By using charts, a brief introduction, world health day 2024 theme, PMJAY scheme and how to use ABHA app were explained in detail. The Program was conclcuded by clarification of the queries. Refreshments were provided. Competitions were concluded and prizes were distributed.

Cooking without fire: topic was organic and nutritional food preparation. Food storage container jars were distributed for the winners.
Debate: topic was do,s and don’t of lifestyle changes for the current and past generation. The trophy was given to the winners.
Chart competetion: topic was my health my right. Stick pens were given to the winners.

INTEGRATED HEALTH TESTING CAMP BENEFITS HUNDREDS IN PONDICHERRY

As a part of Red Ribbon Club Activity collaborative effort was initiated to promote health awareness and disease prevention, a successful Integrated Health Testing Camp was organized by SMVMCH under the guidance from Director Dr.D.Rajagovindan. and Medical Superintendent Dr.M.Prakash in partnership with the Pondicherry AIDS Control society. The camp held at SMVMCH saw impressive turnouts of 306 staffs who were screened

The camp offered a wide range of health services, including free HIV testing and counseling, blood sugar testing, hemoglobin estimation and in addition to these syphilis testing were conducted.

Participants were able to avail themselves of these services in a convenient and supportive environment, with trained professionals guiding them through the process. The integrated health testing camp underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing public health challenges. Such initiatives can make a meaningful difference in the lives of individual and communities.

Introduction:

National Medical Commission (NMC) is considering introducing Family Adoption Program (FAP) as part of the MBBS training curriculum under the community medicine department of every medical college to ensure enhanced healthcare services in rural areas. The idea behind the programme is also to provide MBBS students with on ground hands-on experience from the beginning and also increase the availability and accessibility of doctors or medical professionals in rural areas. Hence, there is a need to take measure to make healthcare more accessible to the rural and needy population and impart community based and community oriented training to budding healthcare professionals.

FAP aims to provide an experiential learning opportunity to Indian Medical graduates towards community based healthcare and thereby enhance equity in health.

What was done?
Sithalingamadam village was selected which is located one and half hours from our SMVMCH institution. Permission was obtained from village panchayath leader for this programme. To begin with initial mapping was done by the Medical social workers from our department, active key people in the village helped them through this process and house list along with street name and head of the family was drafted and map was organised. For each student 5 families were allotted. The microplanning was done. First visit was planned for 1 week from (30/10/2023 – 11/4/2023). The schedule and plan for each day was developed by the senior faculties from department of community medicine.

Briefing was done to students how to collect environmental history in local language and hazards of over-crowding, open air defecation, improper water disposal and sanitation were explained.

Group discussion by faculties and postgraduates

The students were divided among the faculty, for each faculty and postgraduates 25 students were enrolled for monitoring. Morning family visit as per schedule was done followed by small group discussion and updating the records were done. Their experience was shared and their queries were addressed by the faculty in charge.
National Medical Commission (NMC) is considering introducing Family Adoption Program (FAP) as part of the MBBS training curriculum under the community medicine department of every medical college to ensure enhanced healthcare services in rural areas. The idea behind the programme is also to provide MBBS students with on ground hands-on experience from the beginning and also increase the availability and accessibility of doctors or medical professionals in rural areas. Hence, there is a need to take measure to make healthcare more accessible to the rural and needy population and impart community based and community oriented training to budding healthcare professionals.

Diet survey using raw food weighment method

Students collected the diet history for the allotted family using raw food weighment method. Their calories and protein intake in the diet were calculated and health education was provided based on their deficit. Demonstration was done by postgraduates and videos were also projected regarding how to take diet survey.

Personal hygiene and anthropometry measurements

On day 5, students examined the personal hygiene measures and anthropometry (Height, Weight and BMI) for the allotted families. Vitals were also measured. Demonstration were done before recording the measurements for the students in the field.

Special camp

Specialists from General medicine, General surgery, Obstetrics and Orthopedics were provided in the camp service. Village people actively participated in the camp. Blood sugar, BP checkup, ECG were done for the needed patients.
