September 10 (2018) – World Suicide prevention day celebration

The Department of Psychiatry at Sri Manukula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospitalcelebrated “World Suicide Prevention Day” on September 10th, 2018. It was a one-day event conducted at the Auditorium from 9AM to 2PM. Dr.R.Kumar, Professor and HOD of Psychiatry at SMVMCH, delivered the opening remarks. Shri.M.Dhanasekaran, Chairman and Managing Director of the SMVE Trust, delivered the presidential speech. Dr.S.Arun, Professor of Psychiatry, gave a lecture on risk of suicide in adolescentsandhighlighted the consequences of suicide among adolescents and warned about the worrisome rise in suicide rates. At the end, heanswered many students’ questions. Painting, skits, and mimes were among the events held to raise awareness about suicide. The stalls were set up to depict a picture of suicide prevention. The delivery of the information in the most interactive and fascinating manner, according to the participants, was the most intriguing portion of the presentation. The eventhad also made a favorable impression on the audience, lighting a ray of knowledge about suicide prevention.

October 12 (2018) – Mental Health Day celebration

The Department of Psychiatry at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital heldWorld Mental Health Day Celebration with theme- “Working Together to Prevent Suicide”on October 10th, 2018. It was a one-day event conducted at our college auditorium from 9AM to 12Noon. Around 200 undergraduate students from SMVMCH and nursing students from SMVNC along with postgraduates and faculties of Department of Psychiatry, SMVMCH, participated in the event. Dr.R.Kumar, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry at SMVMCH, started the session with a welcome address. Shri.M.Dhanasekaran, Chairman and Managing Director of the SMVE Trust, delivered the presidential speech. Dr.Vikas Menon gave a mind-blowing speech on the current issue of “Working Together to Prevent Suicide.” He broadened our understanding of depression by describing its prevalence, symptoms and treatment options. Painting competitions were also held on this day. The guest speaker rewarded the participants as well. Participants stated that this whole session was highly informative after the event, and we were excited to answer their questions and connect with them throughout the session.
