Report On Complementery Feeding Day- 2021
The Department of Pediatrics celebrated complementary feeding day on 25th November 2021 in SMVMCH. Theme for this year is “Give Proper Nutrition for Optimal Growth”.
As a part of celebration there was display of posters in the OPD, on types of complementary feeds, methods of preparation and nutritional values of various complementary feeds.
A health talk was organized in the hospital podium. Dr. K. Kuppusamy and Dr. T. Kanimozhi Associate Professor of Pediatrics gave valuable information on importance of giving appropriate complementary feeds to infants for proper growth and well being of children. Many parents actively participated in the awareness talk.
This was followed by inauguration of the new Breastfeeding rooms by Dean of our institution Dr. R.N. Kagne and the Dean academic Dr. Karthikeyan and presided by Dr.Bharath Kumar (Professor & HOD) Department of Pediatrics and all faculties of department.
After the event an MCQ questions on complementary feeds in local language (Tamil), with yes or no answers were distributed to women folk and the parents who answered correctly was given prizes. Question and answer session was moderated by Dr. Arul Kumaran Professor of Pediatrics. At the end, children who attend the health talk were given healthy snacks.
Report For New Born Week Celebration 2021
Sri Manakula Vinayagar medical College & Hospital, Department of Pediatrics observed NEW BORN WEEK from 16-11-2021 to 22-11-2021 on theme “SAFETY QUALITY NUTURING CARE – BIRTH RIGHT OF EVERY NEWBORN”. Various events were organised and conducted in a grand manner.
DAY – 1: (16.11.2021)
New born week celebration started with the inauguration of mini exhibition with posters displayed near paediatric OPD, depicting Do’s and Don’ts of essential new born care, danger signs in new born , benefits of breastfeeding , kangaroo mother care, etc. Around 30 women and postnatal mothers participated in the event. MCQ questions with yes or no answers were given to participants and requested to tick correct answer, to assess their knowledge and attitude on new born care.
Health talk was then delivered by Prof. Dr.A.Arul kumaran, Department of Pediatrics and Prof. Dr. K. Kuppusamy, Department of Pediatrics, emphasized various important points on essential new born care, prevention of hypothermia, danger signs, exclusive breastfeeding and regarding appropriate time to start complementary feeding.
Pamphlets highlighting the benefits of breastfeeding essential new born care was distributed to women.
DAY – 2: (17.11.2021)
Neonatal resuscitation (NRP) program was organised and conducted and for Staff nurses in the College simulation lab . Around 15 staff nurses participated in the event. Program included a pre-test followed by an Powerpoint presentation on various steps to be followed in Neonatal resuscitation.
Then hands-on training was given and distributed certificates to all participants.
The event was well organised by Prof. Dr. A. Arul kumaran, supported by Dr. T. Preethi (Assistant Professor), Dr. K. Revathi (Assistant Professor).
DAY – 3: (18.11.2021)
Event – 1:
Health talk was given by Dr. T. Kanimozhi (Associate Professor) Department of Pediatrics in Thirubhuvanai PHC’s on essential new born care. around 30 to 40 women who attended the OPD in PHC participated in the event.
Pre – test and post test were conducted and prices given to the winner.
Event – 2:
Health talk was given by Dr. Nithya (senior resident) department of Pediatrics in Ariyur PHC. Around 20 to 30 women participated in the health talk.
Event – 3:
Poster competition was conducted for staff nurses and post graduates. Staff nurses exhibited various interesting and informative posters and the topic given to the Postgraduates was on this year Theme: “SAFETY QUALITY NUTURING CARE – BIRTH RIGHT OF EVERY NEW BORN”.
Many staff nurses and all our post graduates actively participated. Prof. Dr. K. Kuppusamy and Saraswathy (Nursing superintendent) were judges for the event.
Event inaugurated by Dr. Karthikeyan (Dean Academic) and Dr. Prakash (Medical Superintendent). Pamphlets on essential new born care was released.
Event – 4:
Drawing and poetry competition were conducted for under graduates students Topic: “SAFETY QUALITY NURTURING CARE- BIRTH RIGHT OF EVERY NEWBORN” winner were selected and prizes were given.
Day – 4:
Competition was conducted for postnatal mothers in the ward and to the antenatal mothers attending the OPD of OBG.
Questions with yes or no answers were given and participants were requested to tick the correct answers followed by a health talk given by Dr. K. Revathi (Assistant Professor). Winners were selected and exciting prizes were given.
Day – 5:
Online quiz competition were conducted for post graduates of Pediatrics department in our college using QUIZ app. All 12 post graduates participated in the event and winners were selected. The event was organised by Dr.T.Kanimozhi(Associate Professor) department of Pediatrics.
Day – 6:
New born week celebration concluded with a valedictory function conducted in our college auditorium.
Prize distribution to the winners participated in various events conducted in last one week celebration followed by a guest lecture given by Dr. Tiromourougane Serane Head, Canvij neonatal services Dr. A. G. Padmavati’s Hospital LTD, Puducherry on preterm care. The event was graced by MS, Dr. Jayashree.
Report for Childrens Day Celebration – 2021
Celebration started with a cake cutting in paediatric ward involving all children in ward and those who attended.
Programme was felicitated by Dr.Kalaiselvan (Dean research), Dr.Pragash Medical Superintendent, along with senior faculty members of other department, and faculties , post graduates and CRRI’s of department of Pediatrics.
Drawing competition were conducted for children in paediatric OPD and ward. Many children around 25 participated enthusiastically.
Cakes, chocolates, and attractive toys were given to all children who participated in the event and those who came to OPD. At the end of the session exciting prices, were awarded to the winners.
IAP- Divisional Round for Undergraduates – 2021
The Department of Pediatrics SMVMCH and IAP, Villupuram Puducherry chapter conducted the divisional round of IAP undergraduates Quiz on 26.08.2021from 01.30 to 03.00 pm in the Hospital Auditorium of SMVMCH by Offline mode with appropriate Covid safety measures. The Undergraduates who have won their individuals College rounds were selected for the divisional round from all the medical college in Puducherry and Karaikal. The Divisional co-ordinator of the programme was Dr. A. Arul kumaran Professor of Pediatrics SMVMCH and the Quiz master was Dr. T. Kanimozhi Associate Professor of Pediatrics.
A Prelims was conducted in a form of MCQ’s and 5 medical colleges were chosen for the final rounds. The Colleges selected are IGMC& RI and Sri Venkateshwara Medical college, SMVMCH JIPMER and PIMS. The rounds were conducted as per IAP UG quiz norms. The students from IGMC & RI emerged as winners of the Quiz and PIMS were the runners up. The medals and certificates of the divisional round quiz was handed over by the Dean Academic Dr. Karthikeyan to the Students.
World Breastfeeding Celebration 2021
Sri Manakula Vinayagar medical college and Hospital celebrated the WBW 2021 in a Grand manner. All the events were conducted offline with appropriate safety measures.
Event 1:
On day one there was inauguration of Breastfeeding awareness exhibition by the Director of Our institute to the general public. Posters depicting various positions of breastfeeding, Benefits of breast milk, hazards of bottle-feeding etc were displayed in the local language (Tamil). Around 50-60 postnatal and nursing mothers attended the event. Pamphlets on breastfeeding presented in local language were distributed to the public. This was followed by health awareness talk to the public conducted in the hospital outpatient block. Around 50 mothers, grandmothers, men attended the events. A useful interactive discussion on breastfeeding was given.

Event 2
Poster presentation competition was conducted to the postgraduates of the department of Pediatrics, OBG and Community medicine in the Pediatrics Demo hall of our college. The Topic for the poster is on this year’s theme” Protect Breastfeeding – A shared responsibility. Around 15 participated in the event. This was followed by poster presentation competition for staff nurses on “Factor boosting breast feeding milk output’. Around 20 staff nurses participated, winners were given prizes and certificates.

Event 3
An Breast feeding awareness talk was organised to the pregnant women at primary health centre- Thirubuvanai Puducherry. Posters explaining the hazards of bottle feeds and benefits of breastfeeding were explained and a MCQ competition with Yes or NO answers was conducted to the attended women and prizes were distributed. The event was also attended by men, grandmothers, staff nurses, interns and other health care workers posted in PHC.

A Breast feeding awareness camp organised to pregnant and nursing mothers at elementary school in Valavanur village .The event was presided by Women Inspector of Valavanur police station Mrs. J. Deepa and block medical officer of Valavanur Taluk Dr. Priyadharshini and health talk was given by Dr. A. Arul kumaran HOD Department of Pediatrics and various added important health points on breastfeeding and also added by the women inspector. Hazards of bottle feeding, dangers on usage of breastmilk substitutes were highlighted in the session. Women were also given handouts in local language on breast feeding and a MCQ competition was also conducted and prizes were distributed. Healthy snacks (channa) were also provided to the women folk.

A breast feeding quiz competition was conducted to the undergraduate students of our medical college. Students from VI and VIII semester actively participated there was a preliminary round, 30 teams participated of which 6 were selected for the final rounds which was held on 06.08. 2021 in hospital Auditorium. Winners were given prize shields .The event was witnessed by 150 undergraduate students.
Event 6
An health talk on breastfeeding and MCQ competition to the admitted antenatal and postnatal mothers was conducted in our hospital. The care during pregnancy, the importance on examination of the breast during pregnancy for any retracted nipple, the importance of diet during lactation, support of the family in continuation of breast feeding was explained well with posters to the women folk and it was followed by a MCQ competition was conducted to the attended women. Many grandmothers, mother-in-law’s also attended the event.

Training programme for Staff nurses on Pediatrics COVID Management
As a Part of 15th year Celebration of our hospital the department of Pediatrics SMVMCH conducted a training programme to orient the staff nurses working in various departments of Our institution on Pediatrics Covid symptomology, diagnosis and treatment. Around 60 Staff nurses participated in the orientation programme. The programme was conducted in batches on 28th and 29th June 2021 in the basement auditorium of our hospital from 02.00 to 03.30pm. The programme schedule includes a pretest for 10 mts, followed by recognition of sick Child Assessment and intervention by Dr. A. Arul kumaran Professor & HOD Department of Pediatrics. The second session was on Paediatric COVID symptoms, signs and treatment plan of SMVMCH by Dr. Kanimozhi Associate Professor of Pediatrics.
This was followed by session with the staff nurses by Dr. Preethi on Drug dosing , fluid therapy in Pediatrics and Mrs.Kanagavalli Staff nurse incharge of PICU , they demonstrated to staff nurses on dosage administration of drug the syringe pumps and calculatin about various oxygen delivery devices. This is followed by post test assessment and feedback from the staff nurses who participated in the event.
Training programme for postgraduates on Pediatrics COVID Management
As a Part of 15th year Celebration of our hospital the Department of Pediatrics SMVMCH conducted a training programme to orient the postgraduates of Department of General medicine, Respiratory medicine and Anaesthesiology on paediatric COVID management. Around 34 Participated in the event.
The programme was conducted in batches on 24th and 25th June 2021 from, 2.00 to 3.30 pm in the basement auditorium of our hospital. The programme schedule includes a introduction talk on paediatric COVID by Dr. A. Arul kumaran Professor & HOD department of Pediatrics, COVID -19 management protocol of SMVMCH by Dr. Kanimozhi Associate Professor of Pediatrics.
This was followed by two more sections by Dr. Preethi Assistant professor Department of Pediatrics on Drugs, & Fluids in Pediatrics, Ionotropic dosage and administration and Dr.Hemanth kumar Assistant Professor of Pediatrics on recognition of sick child and oxygen delivery devices.
The programme concluded with the taking home messages on paediatric COVID summarized by Dr. A. Arul Kumaran.
World Autism Awareness Day Celebration Date: 8th & 9th April 2021
The Department of Pediatrics and Psychiatry of SMVMCH along with IAP Villupuram Puducherry chapter celebrated World Austin Awareness day in a grand manner for two days.
On day 1 there was inauguration of exhibition on Autism awareness to public, were posters depicting on early identification of Autism, treatment modalities , and role of parents in improving the skills of Autistic children were depicted. Around 75 parents with children, participated in the event. This was followed by Guest Lecture by Dr.A. Somasundaram Developmental Consultant D ‘SOUL Child Development Centre Chennai and past Central EB member of central IAP. He gave a talk on Identificaton, Evaluation and Management of Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder -a Paediatrician persceptive. The talk was conducted in the Hospital Auditorium of SMVMCH and was attended by Postgraduate and Final Year undergraduate Nursing students, Post Graduates, Professors, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Other Clinical Departments, The talk was simple ,clear informative and interactive.
On Day 2, we had Health Awareness to the public in the hospital courtyard of SMVMCH. The talk was given by Dr. A. Arul Kumaran Professor of Pediatrics, Dr. S. Arun Professor of Psychiatry Dr. T. Kanimozhi Associate Professor of Pediatrics on various topics related to Autism followed by Screening of Children with M- CHAT (Modified check list for Autisum in Toddlers) in Tamil which was done with the help of M.Sc Nursing Students. Around 50 mothers, grand mothers, fathers participated in the event and later colouring Books and Crayons was distributed to Children who participated in the event.
Obesity Day Celebrations – 2021
The Department of Pediatrics along with IAP Villupuram Puducherry chapter jointly organized World Obesity Day in a grand manner on 4th march 2021.
The celebrations began with the inauguration of the mini exhibition in the hospital OPD premises by the Chairman and Managing Director of SMVMCH Trust Shri M. Dhanasekaran. The programme was also attended by Dr. D. Rajagovindan, Director of college along with other senior Faculty members of other Departments, Faculty members and Post –graduates of the Department of Pediatrics.
In the exhibition posters highlighting the identification of obesity using IAP BMI growth charts, causes of obesity due to various altered life style patterns which include increased intake of junk foods, sedentary lifestyle, increased screen time were put up for the public visit . Posters explaining the importance of prevention of obesity by dietary modification, regular exercises and playing aerobic games were also depicted. Many mothers, fathers and children around 75 participated in the event.
This was followed by an interactive session with health talk highlighting this year’s IAP World Obesity Day theme: OBESITY -ACT TODAY to the public was given by Dr. Arulkumaran – HOD, Professor of Pediatrics and Dr. Revathi- Assistant professor- Department of Pediatrics in the hospital podium of our institution. Many mothers and general public attended the event and there was a healthy interactive session.
The health talk was followed by an MCQ’s competition on obesity with yes or no answer was conducted among the parents and the winners were awarded with prizes. The prize was distributed by Deputy medical Superintendent. At the end of the session healthy snacks- sundal and buttermilk were given to all the participants.
The department of Pediatrics along with the IAP Villupuram, Puducherry chapter jointly organized Basic Neonatal Care and Resuscitation Programme (BNCRP) workshop on 27th February 2021 at SMVMCH. 27 delegates which include postgraduates of the Department of Pediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology along with staff nurses of SMVMCH participated in the event. The resource persons were Dr. Soma venkatesh, Associate Professor –MGMCRI and course co-ordinator, Dr. Karthikeyan- Associate Professor and incharge of Neonatal ICU at MGMCRI. The programme started with pretest followed by discussion on various stations like preparation of neonate at birth, routine care, initial steps, Brief and prolonged ventilation and resuscitation of asphyxiated baby followed by lunch. Post lunch there was practical performance evaluation of every delegate. The Programme concluded with post test evaluation followed by high tea.

“National Newborn Week Celebrations -2020”

The Department of Pediatrics celebrated the national Newborn week this year in a grand manner.
Day 1: 16.11.2020
The Newborn week celebrations started with the inauguration of mini exhibition with posters displayed in the postnatal ward depicting the do’s and don’ts of essential Newborn care, Danger signs in newborn, benefits of breast feeding, Kangaroo mother care, Newborn screening etc. Around 35 woman participated in the event. Health talk was given by Dr.A.Arul Kumaran HOD department of Pediatrics and by Dr.T.Kanimozhi Associate Professor of Pediatrics. The event was felicitated by Dr.Jayashree deputy Medical Superintendent of SMVMCH. Pamphlets highlighting the benefits of breastfeeding on essential newborn care was distributed to women.
Day 2: 17.11.2020
Written Newborn quiz was conducted to postgraduates of Pediatrics department and to the interns of our college. Around 25 participated in the event and winners were selected. The event was organized by the faculty of our department Dr.Anna, Dr.Rajesh and Dr.Tanay.
Day 3: 18.11.2020
Neonatal resuscitation workshop (NRP) was conducted in the simulation lab in our college to postgraduates department of Pediatrics and OBG. The programme included pre test, power point presentations by faculties, works station followed by post test and feedback. The event was well organized by organizing secretary of the workshop. Dr.Kanimozhi and supported by the other faculties Dr.Preethi, Dr.Revathi, Dr.Anna and Dr.Arul Kumaran.
Day 4 :19.11.2020
Poster presentation competition was conducted to staff nurses and interns. The topic given was Home based Newborn care – Do’s and Don’ts. Many staff nurses actively participated. Professor Dr.Bharath Kumar and Professor Kuppusamy were the judges for the event.
Day 5: 20.11.2020
Competition was conducted to postnatal mothers in the ward and to the antenatal mothers attending to the OPD of OBG. Winners were selected and prizes were given.
Day 6 :21.11.2020
The week celebrations concluded with valedictory function conducted in our hospital court yard. A health talk was given by the NICU incharge staff nurse Mrs.Gopika to the group of mothers followed by prize distribution to the winners of the competitions conducted in the past one week. The event was graced by the Medical Superintendent Dr.Pragash.
IAP villupuram – Puducherry Chapter and The department of Pediatrics Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital celebrated WBW 1st August – 7th August 2020.This year in a quiet manner in view of the pandemic COVID – 19.
On day 1:
Of WBW week celebration, a mini exhibitation was inaugurated in the postnatal ward with pictures depticing the various positions of breast feeding ,benefits of breastfeeding, nutrition of mother during breastfeeding , breast milk expression techniques etc. Nearly 30 mothers participated in the programme. Pamphlets highlighting the benefits of breast feeding were distributed.
On day 2:
Written quiz competition was conducted to the interns of our college. After initial prelims, final rounds was conducted and the winners were selected (around 50 interns participated)
On day 3:
An interactive health talk to the public in the hospital podium to the attenders attending our OPD of the college with the help of the mike and loud speakers, later questions from the patients was answered (around 100 members listened to the talk).
On day 4:
Poster presentation competition was conducted for staff nurse of our college on the topic of benefits of breast feeding and the winners were selected (around 20 staff nurse participated )
On day 5:
A webinar was conducted via google meet to the under graduate students by Asst.Professor of peadiatics Dr.Hemanth Kumar on benefits of early initiation of breastfeeding, common breast feeding problems and solutions.
On day 6:
Handouts containing questions on breastfeeding with yes or no answer were distributed to the women attending OBG OPD and to postnatal women in our hospital throughout the week and prizes were distributed to the winners (65 women participated )
On day 7:
A poster competition were conducted for postgraduate students on this year theme
“Support breast feeding for the healthier planet”. Postgraduate students of Pediatrics and OBG, participated (around 20) and winners were chosen.

Event – 2019
Iap Trac Workshop – 2019
Under Presidential action plan 2019, TRAC workshop was organized by IAP Villupuram Puducherry chapter and Department of Pediatrics on 10th November 2019 at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and hospital, Kalitheerthalkuppam, Puducherry from 9 am to 2:30 pm.
The programme started with the first talk by Dr.Janani Sankar senior consultant, KKCTH, Chennai, on ABC of CBC followed by interpretation of liver function tests by Dr. Harshad kamat, senior consultant, Apollo victor hospital, Goa. The inauguration was attended by IAP Tamil Nadu state chapter President Dr. Centhil Aram, IAP central executive member DR.M.Singaravelu, Executive member of IAP Villupuram Puducherry chapter Dr.A.Dharmalingam, President Dr. A. Baskaran, secretary Dr.A.Arulkumaran and Director of SMVMCH Dr.D.Rajagovindan along with the national convener of the workshop Dr.Mahesh. A .mohite following the inauguration there was a short tea break and we proceeded with the next two sessions; interpretation of X-rays by Dr.Mahesh A Mohite and urinalysis and RFT by Dr. Prahlad senior consultant, Pediatric Nephrology, Rainbow children hospital, Chennai. Enough time was given for interactive sessions after every talk. The programme concluded at 2:40pm followed by lunch. The total number of IAP members attended the programme were 84. Senior faculty members of IAP Cuddalore chapter also attended the programme.
The programme was a great success and all participants have given very good positive feedback about the workshop.
Workshops
The department of Pediatrics along with IAP –Villupuram-Puducherry chapters jointly organized IAP NRP FGM WORKSHOP on 12th Oct 2019 at SMVMCH for Staff Nurses and Post graduates. The Workshop was funded by the Central IAP. The total trainee attended the workshop is around 25.
The instructors of the workshop are Dr.Somavenkatesh, Associate Professor, MGMCRI and Dr.Soundarajan.P, Professor & HOD of MGMC& RI.
In the morning session, the steps of Neonatal Resuscitation in the first golden minute were explained to the delegates in the groups and in the afternoon session the delegates were assessed by the instructors on their skills of performing Bag and Mask Ventilation given with the help of manikins. The entire programme was coordinated by Dr.Kanimozhi.T, Assistant Professor, of Department of Pediatrics.
World Obesity Day Celebration
The Department of Pediatrics, SMVMCH along with IAP-Villupuram –Puducherry chapters jointly celebrated world Obesity day in a grand manner on 11th Oct 2019. As a part of celebration we had an inauguration of mini exhibition on highlighting the causes of obesity, measurement to assess obesity in children effects of fast food on childhood obesity and the need for various exercises for prevention of obesity in children in posters were displayed.
A Health talk was also given by Dr.Singaravelu.M, IAP Central Executive Board Member and Dr.A.Arulkumaran, Professor& HOD of Pediatrics in the Hospital courtyard in importance of giving vegetables and fruits to the children and to reduce the intake of high calorie sweetened beverages, junk foods and fast foods. Pamphlets highlighting the preventive aspects of obesity in children were distributed to all parents and grandparents of children’s in around OPDs and wards.
World Breastfeeding Week Celebration:-
World Breast feeding week was celebrated from 1st of August to 8th of August 2019 by the department of Pediatrics in a grand manner. Various events was organized by the department which includes, poster presentation and competition to nursing students, Quiz competition for UG & PG medical students.
A health promotion rally on importance of Breastfeeding was also organized on 2nd of Aug 2019. The rally was started from our college and ended up to Madagadipet round turn. Pamphlets on importance of Breastfeeding were distributed to women, during the procession.

ORS Week Celebration 2019
ORS week was celebrated by Sri Manakula Vinayagar medical college and hospital IAP Villupuram Puducherry chapter in a grand manner.
The following events were conducted.
Event 1
We had inauguration of mini exhibition with pictures depicting the signs of dehydration, Content of ORS, ORS amount to be given in different age group, Food substitutes during diarrhea, Pamphlets were distributed to all woman with children attending OPD.
Event 2
An health talk to the public was organized in SMVMCH hospital corridor Health talk was given by the secretary of IAP Dr. A .ARULKUMARAN. Executive committee member Prof M .SINGARAVELU attended event. Nursing staff were also involved in educating the public and demonstration on the preparation of ORS was shown to the crowd. A small handouts was given to the public with questions containing yes or no type answers and the persons who wrote correct answers were awarded.
Event 3
A health camp was organized by the IAP Villupuram Puducherry chapter in the KUMALAM GOVERNTMENT MIDDLE SCHOOL in Puducherry around 100 children from standard IV to VII participated in the event .It was very interactive session with the students and questions regarding ORS was also clarified.
Event 4
A health education talk on ORS organized in SACRED HEART CENTRAL SCHOOL in Villupuram on 29TH JULY (ORS day) .students from standard V to X participated in event. Pamphlets on the importance of giving ORS during acute diarrhea was also distributed to the teachers.

On JULY 29 (ORS day). A lecture was organized in SMVNC. Around 100 nursing students participated. Following the lecture MCQ questions was distributed to students and the winners were awarded.
Throughout the whole week, ORS was kept in the SRI MANAKULA VINAYAGAR MEDICAL COLLEGE and ORS was given free to patients attending Pediatrics OPD.
IAP Child & Adolescent Health Care Week Celebration
The department of Pediatrics celebrated IAP child and Adolescent Health care week from 13th of November to 19th of November 2019 at SMVMCH in a grand manner. As a part of celebration we had an inauguration of mini exhibition on highlighting common adolescent health problems through posters. Nursing students and 120 public viewers were educated.
Followed by a Guest Lecture by Dr.Venkateswaran M.D Psychiatry, Fellowship in child and Adolescent psychiatry on the topic –“Adolescent Mental Health Problems and Parenting challenges” was also organized in the basement auditorium, Hospital block. Around 150 medical students and 50 faculties of SMVMCH were participated with interactive session on management of depression, anxiety among medical students on curriculum and tips were given with faculty members on managing a difficult adolescent.
Childrens Day Celebration:
The department of Pediatrics celebrated Children’s day program on 14th of Nov 2019 at SMVMCH in a grand manner. Drawing competition was also organized for the ward children and winners were gifted with prices. Chocolates, ladoos, and toys were also distributed to the OPD and ward children.
Daughters Day Celebration
The department of Pediatrics celebrated Daughter’s day celebration on 17th of Nov 2019 at SMVMCH in a grand manner. The participants include antenatal, postnatal mothers, girl children’s, adolescent girls admitted in pediatric ward. Health talk was given about nutrition of female children and the importance of lifestyle skills that has to be taught to female children and on adolescent vaccination for girl child. Healthy snacks were provided to all participants.
National Newborn Week & World Prematurity Day Celebration
The department of Pediatrics celebrated National Newborn week from 15th to 21st of November at SMVMCH in a grand manner. As a part of celebration we had a guest lecture by Dr.Eswararaja Tinakaran, Clinical head department of Neonatology, Rela Institute, medical centre, Chennai on “Follow-up of preterm by primary care physicians.”
Followed by competitions were conducted to antenatal and postnatal mothers and prizes were distributed to the winners. Various health talks to the public were given by faculties, postgraduates and staff nurses about the do’s don’ts of essential newborn care, preterm care. Quiz competition was also conducted for staff nurses and prizes were given.
World Obesity Day Celebration
The Department of Paediatrics Sri manakula vinayagar medical college & Hospital along with IAP – Villupuram Puducherry chapter jointly celebrated world obesity day in a grand manner on 11th oct 2019 ….As a part of celebrations , to create awareness to the public on the rising trend of obesity in children , a mini exhibition was inaugurated by the Director of SMVMCH . Here posters highlighting the causes of obesity , measurement to assess obesity in children , effects of fast food and junk food on childhood obesity and the need for various exercises for prevention ofobesity in children were displayed
This was followed by a open talk to the public in hospital OPD podium .The talk was given by Prof Dr Singaravelu IAP central executive board member and Prof Dr Arulkumaran HOD Dept of Paediatrics SMVMCH . The talk addressed this year’s theme of world obesity day “EAT GOOD FEEL GOOD AND LOOK GOOD “ explaining to the public the importance of giving vegetables and fruits to the children and to reduce the intake of high calorie sweetened beverages,junk foods and fast foods . The talk was attended by other medical fraternity , nursing staff, mothers, fathers and grand parents around 100 participated . At the end of the talk pamphlets highlighting the preventive aspects of obesity in children were distributed and all were provided with healthy snacks (sundal and buttermilk). The awareness programme was widely appreciated by the public.
IAP NRP FAM
The Department of Paediatrics- Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College & Hospital along with IAP Villupuram Puducherry Chapter jointly organized IAP NRP FAM ( BNRCP PROVIDER COURSE ) on 12th October 2019 at SMVMCH for Staff Nurses and Post graduates ( around 25 ). The workshop was funded by the Central IAP.
The instructors of the workshop included Dr. Soma Venkatesh Associate Professor of MGMC& RI, Dr. P.Soundarajan Professor & HOD of MGMC & RI and Dr. Karthikeyan Associate Professor MGMC & RI.
In the morning session the steps of Neonatal Resuscitation in the first golden minute were explained to the delegates in the groups followed by the afternoon session at 2 AM in which the delegates were assessed by the instructors on their skills of performing Bag and Mask ventilation given with the help of manikins. The entire programme was coordinated in our college by Dr.Kanimozhi Assisstant Professor Dept of Paediatrics SMVMCH.
National Newborn Week Celebrations
The Department of Pediatrics is celebrating National Newborn care week in every year from NOV’15th to 21st. The week long celebrations include awareness camp in the community on essential newborn care, workshops on neonatal resuscitation for postgraduates, staff nurses, and Newborn quiz for the Medical Students and guest lectures by eminent faculties in the field of neonatology. Last year (2017) Prof.Arasar Seeralar, Director, IOG attended the valedictory function and highlighted the importance aspects on preterm care.
World Breastfeeding Week
A week long World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated in the first week of August every year since 2006. During the week activities like Breastfeeding promotion rally,Radio talk, Quiz programs, Elocution competitions for Medical and Nursing Students, Rural camps for Women folk etc. are undertaken to create and strengthen the awareness about Breastfeeding.
A valedictory function is held on 7th August every year for which eminent persons from Literary World, Departments of Education, Health, Social Welfare, Lactation Consultant are invited to address the Womenfolk, Nurses, Medical Students etc. and Prizes and Certificates are distributed to Winners of various competitions held during the WBW.
Rural Breastfeeding Awareness Camp
Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital is a fourteen year old institution with full fledged departments including Pediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynecology. All faculties involved in care of children are committed in promoting, protecting and supporting Breast feeding.
The World Breast feeding week was celebrated in our institution for the last 14 years consecutively.
On the first day we had inauguration of the mini exhibition with pictures depicted the benefits of breastfeeding to the mother and the baby, various positions of breastfeeding, importance of giving hind milk, common breastfeeding problems, and its solutions were exhibited and explained to mothers of reproductive age, lactating mothers attending the OPD of Pediatrics and OBG (Nearly 500 women have been educated). Pamphlets containing the benefits of breast milk were also distributed to the women folk.
A Breastfeeding promotion rally was organized on 02-08-2019. The rally was jointly organized by Department of Pediatrics, Department of Nursing SMVMCH along with Indian Academy of Pediatrics Villupuram Puducherry chapter. The rally was covered around 5 kms. The importance and benefits of breastfeeding was highlighted throughout the rally with the loudspeaker and mike and pamphlets were distributed throughout the rally to women and various shopkeeper men and housewife throughout the rally. The theme of this year WBW 2019 “Empower parents and enable breastfeeding” was also told to the public in Madagadipet roundturn.
A Well Baby Contest was held on 03-08-2019 at 10:00am in Pediatrics Out-patient Department and healthy breastfed, apparently immunized babies were selected and prizes were given.
A Breastfeeding Awareness community talk was organized in Koliyanur village. Pregnant, Lactating women, Self help group women, Anganwadi workers, Sector Health Nurses, Village health nurse around 200 participated in the event which was organized on 04-08-2019 from 11:00am to 12:00pm. A very interesting and interactive session took place during the camp. Prizes were also given to women who answered the questions on Breastfeeding correctly.
A Intercollege elocution competition for Nursing students was conducted on 05-08-2019 both in Tamil and English. Nursing students of around 12 Nursing colleges participated in the competition. The topic given was on this year’s theme “Empower Parents and Enable Breastfeeding”. Nearly 150 student nurses, nursing staffs, faculties of nursing college participated in the event. The program lasted for nearly 3hrs
A Intercollege Breastfeeding Quiz Programme was organized for the Undergraduate Students on the same day at 02:00pm. Nearly 6 teams from various medical colleges participated. The programme lasted for 2hrs and winners were awarded with cash prize and trophy.
On 06-08-2019, a Quiz programme was organized for the Postgraduate students of Community Medicine, Pediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Around 50 postgraduate students of other departments also witnessed the event.
As a part of health education, handouts containing questions regarding Yes or No answers were distributed to women attending OPD, antenatal and postnatal mothers throughout the week, and answers were collected and prizes were given.
A community Health talk was organized in the Thirubuvani PHC on 07-08-2019. Around 50 women, grandmothers, pregnant women along with husbands attended the event.
A Valedictory function was organized in our hospital auditorium on 08-05-2019. Dr.Somasekar, IAP President Tamil Nadu State chapter was invited as the Chief Guest. He spoke about the importance on promotion of breastfeeding and highlighted about this year’s theme of WBW 2019. Prizes and certificates were distributed by the guest speaker to the winners of the various competition held during this week.
Event – 2018
Pediatric CMEs
Periodic CMEs are organized by Pediatrics department every year since 2012, in association with the District branches of Villupuram & Pondicherry and Cuddalore of Indian Academy of Pediatrics. Every year around 100 Delegates from Virudhachalam, Cuddalore, Thirukovilur, Gingee, Tindivanam, Villupuram and Pondicherry and postgraduates from other medical colleges will also attend the CME. Credit points were awarded to them by the Tamil Nadu, Dr.M.G.R Medical University. The last CME was conducted on 14th of October 2018, were eminent speakers from Chennai were invited.

ORS week celebration
ORS week is celebrated in the last week of July every year. This year from 23rd-29th of July 2018, it was celebrated in grand manner. This year theme is “ORS all the day keeps dehydration at bay”. There was a mini stall exhibition and Awareness talk and oral quiz to the public on 26.07.2018 at 10.00 a.m in Reception corridor near Pediatric OPD and prizes were given.
Children’s Park
An Indoor Park Opposite to reception area is provided with a cushioned floor mat and plays articles like Tricycles, Swings, Slope, and See-saw etc. for Children under 3 years of age.
